It is with great honor and distinction that we introduce to you the Eta Chapter that brought the first South Asian Sorority to Florida. It all started during the Spring of 2001 when five young ladies came up with the idea of starting a South Asian Sorority at Florida International University.
Once the word got out, the interest and curiosity of other FIU ladies began to grow, and what once was just the potential for a sorority soon became a reality. With the interest of 10 young ladies, a faculty advisor, Dr. Kalai Mathee, and constant contact with the DPO expansion committee, the Florida International University Eta Chapter was formed.
Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. was introduced into the FIU community on November 11th 2001 through ten young ladies who became the founding class: Vidya Maharaj, Aarti Maharaj, Gem Jagmohan, Laura P. Ramsahai, Stacy Ramsahai, Mariel Rutundo-Patino, Toni Lalla, Julianna Lewis, Joanna Lewis and Nalini Ramgoolam.
Our National Founders created the backbone of this sorority on the basis of five pillars: Sisterhood, Respect, Loyalty, Honesty, and Friendship. The sisters at FIU strive to uphold these pillars and although we are still growing as a sorority, we are continually making our mark on campus and in our community. The extreme diversity of cultures and ethnicities found here in Miami have allowed DPO Eta Chapter to broaden its horizons and embrace all cultures as well as welcome them into the sorority.

The purpose of Delta Phi Omega shall be to foster unity among South Asian women, build community awareness, and gain a greater understanding of oneself and others. The sorority aspires to instill leadership traits, excel in all academic endeavors, to encourage an active relationship between the sorority and its respective university, and shall do so with the utmost compassion, dignity, and fortitude.
